Oracle BI is now a mature product that has built on the original vision of an Enterprise Wide Information model capable of reporting across multiple data sources out to many devices in many formats. BI Enterprise Edition (OBIEE) is consistently rated in the Business Intelligence Leader Quadrant by Gartner. It is the platform most often chosen to support Oracle’s ERP and CRM applications because of the availability of Oracle BI Applications (with pre-built integration, data warehouse and reporting facilities).
The majority of OBIEE customers are on OBIEE 10g. The newer version – OBIEE 11g – has been available for 18 months and we are starting to see systems in production and many customers planning to upgrade in 2012. The people leading the way are of course new implementations of OBIEE but they have been closely followed by sites where Essbase forms a key data source. OBIEE 11g is the first version to properly support the Essbase multi-dimensional model and hierarchies. Customers are deploying 11g to take advantage of this. The other key attributes of OBIEE 11g which are driving the upgrade process are
- Deploying the Oracle 11g database with OBIEE 11g gives significant performance gains on the same hardware
- The reworked user interface is clearer and more coherent. Numerous small enhancements lead to a much better user experience and as a consequence the user satisfaction is improved.
- New features such as integrated geospatial reporting and time series animation allow information to presented in new and more appealing ways
- The ability to embed BI into business processes is further enhanced by the new action framework which enables a user to turn insight into action within the BI application.

Any organisation whose core systems are built by Oracle or run on Oracle platforms should be considering Oracle BI as their standard. Its low cost of ownership, scalability and flexibility make it the right choice. For Oracle application customers, the ability to implement an off the shelf data warehouse will consistently save money and be lower risk than creating their own data warehouse from scratch.
Anyone with a mature Oracle BI 10g platform should be planning to upgrade in 2012
